Sustainability

Sustainable development

We understand that sustainability is a complex matter and we are transparent about how we are doing. We know we aren’t perfect but we’re working on continuously improving and we strive to do the absolute best we can for people, planet, and profit.

During this, the UN Decade of Action, we are doing as much as we can to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals. See which SDGs we’re contributing to beneath each of the sections!

Creating Jobs

Our first major achievement in terms of sustainability is creating jobs for community members, including women.

We currently employ 90 farm labourers who in turn support their families.

As we grow, even more employment opportunities will be available to local community members.

Bring in the Bees

Almost 90% of wild plants and 75% of leading global crops depend on animal pollination. One out of every three mouthfuls of our food depends on pollinators. Crops that depend on pollination are five times more valuable than those that do not.

Bees are important pollinators for our crops and important species for our planet!

We have installed 32 bee boxes on the farm and Isaac Sitole has trained as a beekeeper to take care of them.

Isaac enjoys working with the bees and envisions having his own beekeeping project one day. He believes in working with nature and reaping rewards from it.

The bees colonise ‘catch boxes’ and once a swarm is caught, we wait 2 months for the colony to become strong before transferring it into a ‘brood box’.

Our apiary is in progress to hold 75 hives. By the end of 2023, we would like to have 1 bee hive per employee which equates to 100 colonised hives.

Feeding families

We are working towards SDG 2, Zero Hunger (and some other SDGs) by growing food!

Our labourers also get food packs so we know that they have enough to feed their families.

During our first season, we grew over 100 tonnes of produce and we expect this to increase dramatically.

Trees Planted

We know this is a drop in the ocean especially considering the estimation that Zimbabwe has lost a third of its forests to deforestation.

We are starting a tree planting programme on the farm to offset our emissions and we’ll keep you posted on how it goes.

Aiming to be carbon neutral negative positive

We aspire to be a carbon positive company.

We are currently working on our emissions calculations as well as reducing our emissions to only those that are absolutely necessary .

We will offset what we cannot operate without emitting through planting trees on the farm which means we can also care for them ourselves and ensure that they thrive. No third parties, no complex offset schemes, just good, old fashioned tree planting! And we’ll document it all to prove that we are genuine.
